Tis the season y'all!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas this year. My family has been blessed beyond measure and I am just so incredibly thankful for this season of goodness.
I love Christmas and I love Christmas traditions. The lights, the decorations, the food, the family, the presents, the pure joy you see on a child's face Christmas morning. My family is known for having some interesting (to say the least) traditions. Growing up we didn’t have lots of money. So, on Christmas my parents used to buy us our own name brand cereal as a Christmas gift. It was a gift we look forward to every year, because you didn’t have to share your cereal with anyone unless you wanted to share. Plus, it was the name brand so we felt rich! Ha! The joys of childhood.
Another unique tradition we had was giving a fake snake to a different family member each year. This all started because my wonderful father is a very mean man! I’m half kidding, of course. Dad spent several months leading up to Christmas getting me hooked on peanuts. Every chance he got he would buy me a bag of peanuts and we would enjoy their salty goodness together. Come Christmas morning I go to unwrap one of my gifts and it was a can of peanuts. I was overwhelmed with joy! So excited to open my delicious gift. Except this wasn’t peanuts. It was one of those spring snakes that pop up a scare you! What a wonderful gift to give a four-year-old. Needless to say, I flung the fake peanut can and ran away crying. To this day I don’t eat peanuts out of a can and I don’t like snakes. After that every year a new person in the family received a fake snake at Christmas!
Phillips Big Christmas was always something I treasured and look forward to each year. However, now that I have my own family, we’ve started a few of our own traditions but we’ve kept the most important tradition. Before we open any presents, we pause and read the Christmas story. We’d grab a bible and turn to Luke Chapter 2 and read the story of Jesus’ birth. I think my parents just wanted to make sure we knew and never forgot the real reason for the season. It brings me so much joy to be able to do this same tradition with my boys.
I hope you all had a great time celebrating your own family traditions and I trust you all had a very Merry Christmas!
This week I had the privilege to bless our boy's teachers… These women do such a great job of loving our boys and teach them so many new things! Thank you for investing in our boys! Thank you for teaching them and growing them. The foundations you have helped establish will have everlasting effects on both them and us. We are forever thankful for all you do for our boys!
